Wayne Memorial Wins Georgia Safe to Sleep Designation

Parents plan for months, perhaps even years, for a new baby to join their family. While they plan the nursery, and pick out possible names for their baby, they can take comfort in knowing the staff at Wayne Memorial is also planning for their baby’s best beginning via proper sleep training.

Through Georgia’s Safe to Sleep Campaign, the obstetrics department at the hospital educates parents onsite about creating a safe sleep environment for their newborn and model proper sleeping practices as well. This is, in fact, one of the four primary objectives of the campaign. The other three are:

* Prevent sleep-related infant deaths in Georgia

* Disseminate accurate and consistent messages that encourage families to make informed decisions about infant sleep and

* Increase access to resources that support behaviors that protect infants from sleep-related deaths.

Annually, more than 4,000 infants in the United States, pass away suddenly and unexpectedly. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, Georgia averaged three infant deaths per week due to sleep-related causes (as of 2014). This collaborative project is led by six entities in the state: the Georgia Children’s Cabinet, Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Department of Public Health, Georgia Hospital Association and the Georgia Obstetrical and Gynecological Society.

We voluntarily took this campaign on in our hospital because we believe babies deserve the best possible start to life,” says Anita Brewer, Wayne Memorial’s Ob/Gyn Department Manager. “It may take our staff a few extra minutes each day to ensure we’re modeling and teaching proper sleep practices, but we know it’s worth the effort. We want parents to rest assured knowing when they leave our hospital with their newborn baby, they have all the tools and education on proper sleep training as part of their overall infant care.”
