Local Credit Union Provides the Gift of a Good Read

Helps patients pass the time during their visits to the

Jesup, GA – Last month, prior to the COVID-19 situation, a group of employees gathered from a local credit union and asked, “What more can we do for our community?” Cheryl Spires, President of Altamaha Federal Credit Union, contacted the hospital CEO to inquire what needs the hospital may have. And out of that conversation, an idea was born. Patients at the recently opened Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion in Jesup (now with a second location) could certainly benefit from new reading material to help pass the time during their visits. “We are thankful for the credit union’s generosity, as some patients may be here for a few hours during their infusions,” said Hope Wright, Office Coordinator for the cancer center.

“As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, Altamaha Federal Credit Union is always looking for ways to exemplify the cooperative principle of concern for community,” added Spires. “We are so grateful to have the Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Pavilion at Wayne Memorial Hospital here in Jesup and are honored to be able to provide its patients and their caregivers with books to read during visits for treatment. Altamaha Federal Credit Union has a long relationship with Wayne Memorial, and we look forward to responding to many more of its needs.” Altamaha Federal Credit Union provided over 40 new books to the facility.

With 65 years in business, Altamaha Federal Credit Union, recently named Wayne’s Favorite Credit Union, is Jesup’s oldest federally-insured financial cooperative and serves over 9,500 member owners in Wayne and Long counties. Wayne Memorial Hospital, whose mission is to provide high quality health care services to all patients, built a state-of-the-art facility in 2007. It is the third largest employer in Wayne County with 500 employees, 84 beds and is a three-time winner of the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals Small Hospital of the Year Award.
